Your Internship
Internships are a way for people to get hands-on professional experience in a field that interests them. Internships are usually short-term appointments where students can apply classroom learning to real-world issues. The opportunities serve as an excellent way to gain knowledge and build a professional network.
Overview
Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Summer Internship Program is an 11-week, full-time, paid summer internship program for undergraduate and graduate students. It will provide you the ultimate learning experience by combining meaningful work in a real-world environment, supervision and mentorship by experienced professionals, and your own active reflection.
Each week you will be involved in leadership programs and work alongside staff to build relationships with Arkansas Blue Cross professionals. As an intern, you will:
- Participate in team-building activities
- Learn from professional coaching
- Receive hands-on, relevant work experience
- Complete special projects
- Participate in a community service project
This is a great opportunity to put your book knowledge to real-world use and explore your career interests through exciting and fulfilling work assignments. Your creativity and fresh viewpoints will be valued by a company that thrives on opportunity and change.
An internship is largely what you make of it.
Tap into your potential and see what it can do for you and Arkansas Blue Cross.
Expectations
Arkansas Blue Cross views you as an important contributor to our enterprise. You will have regular workdays with interesting work assignments. We expect you to be fully committed. This includes enthusiasm about your work, dedication, hard work and a great attitude. You should put forth your best effort each day and leave a great impression in the mind of your supervisor.
- Behave professionally: Dress professionally, use appropriate language and treat others with respect. Some helpful hints: be flexible, proactive, alert and keep a good attitude.
- Be responsible: Comply with all internal policies, procedures and safety regulations. Be careful to respect the property and confidentiality of Arkansas Blue Cross in all relevant matters during and after your internship.
- Give your best: Interns are to perform to the best of their abilities. Your internship is like any other professional position with the same standards of reliability and quality of work.
- Monitor your cell phone usage: There is a time and a place for cell phones. Unless your job requires the use of a cell phone, you should put it away when you enter the workplace. During meetings, turn your cell phone to vibrate and try to not talk on them in public spaces or while you’re working.
Evaluation Methods
We want to know how you're doing!
An internship can only be a true learning experience if constructive feedback is provided. Your engagement and participation are important, and we encourage you to learn as much as possible. Your supervisor or project leader will:
- Determine if you are successfully meeting your learning objectives
- Evaluate your positive accomplishments.
- Identify areas of improvement
A performance evaluation will be sent to your supervisor or project leader on week four. Evaluations will be used for scholarship/cash award consideration and participation in future internship opportunities with Arkansas Blue Cross.
We Value Your Feedback
A brief electronic evaluation will also be sent to each intern during the 10th week. Please complete the survey before your last day of employment.
Birkman Assessment
All summer interns will have an opportunity to complete a Birkman Assessment - a powerful tool to identify your strengths, behaviors, motivations, and interests. You will know more about yourself, what makes you unique, and how this impacts you and those with whom you interact.
Specific benefits include:
- Learning what interests you at work and at home
- Discovering what behaviors others notice about you
- Articulating your unique strengths and opportunities
- Exploring your career interests with scientifically backed
